On April 23, 2022, the Watertown Police Department responded to what would later be classified as a horrific tragedy for the Kuslis family.

Police said when they arrived on the scene it was determined that a 4-year-old child had become entangled under a slide seeder that was attached to the rear of a farm tractor. Even though the tractor was stationary the blade machine remained engaged.

The child was identified as Ellie Kuslis, a girl described as “a gift to all who knew her,” according to her obituary. The obituary reads, “Ellie was perfect, a spark plug of a girl whose favorite color was blue, who loved all animals and gave them names, like “Poppy” and “Princess Whitey.” Unicorns were her most favorite of all.

Her family and community mourn Kuslis as this tragedy has touched every corner of Watertown and Connecticut. The community is supporting the Kuslis family by donating to their GoFundMe, which has raised over $48,000. You can find the page here.

Businesses around town have also dedicated special menu items in honor of Ellie Kuslis. Hawk Ridge Winery created a special “Unicorn Slushie,” of blue raspberry and watermelon slush, topped with whipped cream and unicorn dust. The limited-time slushie will be available beginning Friday, April 29. All proceeds will go to the Kuslis family.

Jimmy’s of Watertown will be selling Unicorn Pancakes in memory of Ellie Kuslis starting this weekend. All proceeds will go to the Kuslis family.
